In August 2023, the Artomatic team created a project
«Evolution 3.1.»
"Evolution 3.1" is a unique technological and creative project realized by a team of developers led by Russian artist Misha Most in Novosibirsk. Work on the mural "Evolution 3.1" began as part of the project and educational intensiv "Archipelago 2023". The project was organized by Universal University of Creative Industries and the autonomous non-profit organization "University 2035".

- This year Archipelago was dedicated to the creation of a new industry - unmanned aircraft systems. We set ourselves a number of ambitious challenges that will set the stage for the operational development of this industry in Russia and its work for the benefit of society.
One such challenge was the idea of using a drone to do something that no one had ever done before - create a painting on a large outdoor wall. Solving such challenges is the best way to develop yourself in the industry. The project was implemented on the territory and with the support of Novosibirsk State Technical University,” said Vasily Tretyakov, Advisor to the Rector on Strategy and Development, ANO University 2035
This year
The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, held a meeting with leaders of creative industries, where special attention was paid to industrial design. This same focus became the main focus for our team: we created a truly unique technology for the country and the world. In practice there were drone painters or work in closed spaces, but “Evolution 3.1” has become a great technological breakthrough that will become the leader of industrial design, high-rise painting and other related industries, - shared Ekaterina Chechil, Head of Special Projects and Consulting Department at Universal University of Creative Industries, project manager.

- One of the main challenges in implementing the project was obtaining permission to open the sky for our drone to operate. The team received all the documents, and I think this experience will help to create all the necessary instructions and checklists for photographers, videographers and artists who work with copters,” specified Sofia Gerasimenko, executive producer of Universal University.
- Creating a mural using a copter is an incredibly ambitious task, as it requires not only controlling the drone's flight to within a few centimeters on the street, in windy conditions, but also ensuring the spraying of paint from a canister that is only a dozen centimeters away from the powerful propellers holding the copter in the air and blowing the flying stream of paint. Since the accuracy of GPS and other existing systems is not enough to achieve the required flight accuracy, the project team developed a new type of navigation system specifically for the mural, using a stationary 4K camera, active tags on board the drone and lidar to determine its position,” said Andrei Koregodsky, technical director of the project.
- For the project Misha prepared a complex vector drawing, which consisted of many different lines, curves and geometric shapes. To realize the idea, we developed an original algorithm for regulating the drone's flight control, which would be able to draw exactly. This is how we achieved a balance between the detail of each line and the accuracy of its location,” shared Oleg Kalachev, the main developer of the project.
- The drone design itself is also unique - most of its parts can be printed on a 3D printer right on the job site. We made the first drone back in Moscow, and the missing elements of its protection and the second drone were already being finalized in Novosibirsk. It is important to note that while weighing 5 kilograms, the drone itself is almost 100% made of composite materials, which makes it very light, but most importantly - environmentally friendly and recyclable, - said Georgy Bondar, Operations Director of the project and General Director of Aviacsmith LLC.
- The idea of painting with a drone has crossed the minds of, in my opinion, thousands of graffiti artists around the world, but there are a number of technological difficulties that simply do not allow painting with a remote control. That's how the idea of creating a sophisticated drone under full computer control came about. In 2017, using a programmed drone, I painted a smaller mural “Evolution 2.1” on the theme of human-machine interaction in the premises of a factory rearranged as an art space. The experiment was unique and showed that it is possible to create masterpieces without touching the canvas, but behind such work is the labor of a whole team of technical specialists. “Evolution 3.1” is a completely new story of its kind: never before has an artist drone created cultural objects of such an area and in the open air. Such an experience will not only motivate artists who want to work with technology, but will also give a new impetus to the development of traditional design and industrial industries,” shared Misha Most, Russian artist and author of the project.
